For dental specialists with an international focus

Interactive Online Dental Dictionary now with over 13,000 English-German terms presents its new Internet website

Bad Homburg, Germany, August 11th 2006.

The Online Dental Dictionary is a useful English-German/German-English translation tool that can be accessed on the Internet at www.Dental-Dictionary.com. Compiled by qualified dental specialists, it is frequently updated and expanded. The terms are also checked regularly to ensure that they remain in current use. A unique feature is the interaction with website users: if a user fails to find a term in the dictionary, the editor researches the correct translation and e-mails it back. The dictionary includes more than 13,000 terms covering all areas of dentistry and dental technology. The Internet website has just been redesigned and upgraded.

Anyone with an English technical text requiring a translation of terms such as “clasping axis”, “spillway“ or “post and core“ into German soon discovers the limitations of a printed dictionary. The Online Dental Dictionary provides the solution. Go to www.Dental-Dictionary.com to subscribe to the dictionary, which is the only one of its kind on the Internet.

The English-German/German-English terminology is updated on a weekly basis. In addition to standard dental terminology, the Online Dictionary focuses on terms that are not listed in a standard dental dictionary. The dentists, dental technicians and other dental specialists, who compile the Online Dictionary, are all native speakers. They continually research terms, in particular those relating to new or up-and-coming specialist areas such as CAD/CAM, all-porcelain restorations or implantology. The dictionary also takes into account differences in American and British terminology and spelling.

A special feature of the Online Dictionary: it is interactive. If the user enters a term that is not yet listed, the editors deal with the matter immediately and e-mail the translation. Printed dictionaries only provide terms in use up to the date of publication. In certain instances the translation may not even be technically correct.

With more than 13,000 specialist terms, the dictionary covers the whole spectrum of dentistry and dental technology, from “alloy” and “avulsion fracture” to “zirconia“ and ”zygomatic process”. The Internet website has just been redesigned. It is easy to access and the layout is user-friendly.

The Online Dictionary has other features too: if a search term is entered, for example “pliers”, the translation (“Zange”) appears along with a list of related terms, in this instance not only “flat-beak pliers – Flachzange“ and “back-action pliers - Spreizzange“ but also “loop bending pliers - Schlaufenbiegezange” and more. A number of terms also have synonyms listed to give the user a choice of style, e.g. “Bissnahme“ along with “Bissregistrierung“ can be found under ”bite taking”. If a term has more than one meaning, the application is also included: for the German word “Riegel“, an explanation is given with the English translation ”lock (prosthodontics)“ or ”bar (polish)“. To see examples, go to www.Dental-Dictionary.com and click on “Beispiele/Examples“. This page has an extensive list of English terms with their German equivalents and provides a sample of the compilers’ specialized knowledge.

The English-German/German-English Online Dictionary can be accessed anywhere in the world and used, for example, by a company’s subsidiaries abroad and all other parties involved. This ensures that the technical terminology used in brochures, instructions for use and other publications is consistent.

There is also a translation service linked to the Online Dental Dictionary. If you require a translation of a text rather than individual English or German terms, click on “Dental Translations” to place an order for a translation of the entire text into the relevant language.

By the way, for “clasping axis“, the dictionary lists “Klammerachse“ in German. “Spillway” is ”Abzugskanal“ and ”post and core“ is translated as ”Stiftaufbau“.
